Hertford Castle's 15th-century gatehouse and stretches of Norman curtain wall stand in peaceful riverside grounds right in the centre of town. Once a royal residence, the castle is now home to Hertford Town Council, and its lawns are a favourite spot for picnics and riverside walks. The grounds host outdoor events through the year, including a festive Christmas market.
